The Arab Authority continues the Application and Dissemination of Zero-Tillage Farming System

The Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID) continues the application and dissemination of the zero-tillage farming technology. Based on the preparations made and the current rainfall, the farming season 2007/2008 in the rain-fed sector in Sudan is promising with excellent yields in the various locations for applying this farming system. The Arab Sudanese Blue Nile Agricultural Company (ASBNACO) is applying the system for the third commercial production season. The grown crops include sorghum, sesame, cotton and sunflower. The farmer locations for applying the system under the program for technology transfer to small farmers, as well as the Pioneers Company for Zero-tillage Farming, show proper preparations which indicate promising productivities.

His Excellency Mr. Abdul Kareem Mohammad Al-Amri, President of AAAID, made many visits to the sites of applying Zero-tillage farming system for this season. His site visits spanned the preparation period to the sowing period. This is a continuation of His Excellency’s visits to the sites of applying this farming technology throughout all the stages of the farming operation for all the previous years. He places a special emphasis on this farming technology as it has a potential for effective contribution in developing Arab agriculture, within other efforts.

It is worth mentioning that the crop yields under the zero-tillage farming system amounted to fourfold the achieved yields under the traditional farming systems. Therefore, AAAID aims at the dissemination of this farming technology to other locations in Sudan and to a number of other Arab countries. The achieved crop yields under this farming system stand as an open invitation to all parties, and national, regional and international institutions and organizations concerned with combating poverty, and with food security, and sustainable rural and agricultural development in an effective manner, to work for enabling farmers to apply this promising farming system which has achieved proven success. For more information on the application and adaptation of zero-tillage farming system click here.
