Mr. Ali Bin Saeed Al-Sharhan You are here: Zero-Tillage Farming: 1- Agadi Pilot Farm 2- Program for Zero-Tillage Technology Transfer to Farmers 1- Agadi Pilot Farm The Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID) has adopted a program for developing rain-fed agriculture in Sudan and modernizing it by applying Zero-Tillage cultivation system which is applied in advanced countries, such as the U.S. The system applies integrated technology packages and mechanization. To implement the above mentioned program, AAAID has established a pilot farm in Agadi, Blue Nile , Sudan . The pilot farm, which is owned by the Arab Sudanese Blue Nile Agricultural Company (one of AAAID affiliated companies), has achieved substantial success since the year 2001. Large-scale experiments have been implemented in the pilot farm project for comparing different levels of tillage. The Zero-Tillage, or No plowing, cultivation system out-performed all other systems, and achieved dramatic increases in productivity and quality over the other systems. For instance, the yield of sorghum has jumped from 250 Kg/feddan to 1200 Kg/feddan, and the yield of sunflower jumped from 150 Kg/feddan to 600 Kg/feddan ( 4200 meters ). This is in addition to the rise in quality. Therefore, the zero-tillage system has been adopted as the cultivation system in the farm. The zero-tillage system, when mulch debris is kept on the land, helps increasing moisture content in the soil. It also helps minimizing soil erosion. Integrated technology packages and mechanization are integral parts of the zero-tillage system applied in Agadi. Its purpose was to enhance the role of AAAID in different areas of development, particularly in rural agricultural communities, by mobilizing resources and directing them to assist in raising the productivity of the rural agricultural community and alleviating poverty in it. Objectives: Provide support to the basic services, such as health, education and water in production areas and poverty pockets. Provide support services to poor small farmers with the objective of increasing production and raising productivity by means of introducing suitable technologies and providing plant and animal production inputs. Provide revolving capital to small poor producers, especially women. Provide training and capacity building to small and medium businesses in order to increase productivity and sustain it. Sources of Finance: The Fund depends on contributions from the participating partners who currently include AAAID, the Ministry of Finance, the Savings Bank, the National for Fund for Social insurance in the Republic of Sudan. Currently the total contributions amount to about 1.3 million, and the paid-up amount as at the end of 2007 was 1.0 million. This is a research station located in the site of the Arab Sudanese Blue Nile Agricultural Company with the main objective of determining the cultivation practices of the Zero-tillage farming system, as well as solving the problems facing the application of this farming system at the investment level. During the year 2006, some enhancements were introduced into the zero-tillage farming system. One of those enhancements was the addition of fertilizer into soil before sowing the seeds. As a result, crop yields recorded considerable increases. For instance, cotton yield increased to 800 kg/feddan. During the year 2006, twenty field trials were implemented. They included variety trials for cotton, sorghum, sunflower, and maize, as well as observations on legume crops and millet. They also included trials for weed control, and trials for buda (striga hermonthica) control. In addition, the program included fertilization trials, field water control trials, and sorghum cost reduction trials. The results showed that the sorghum variety Wad Ahmed out-yielded the other varieties, and that the cotton varieties introduced by the Agricultural Research Corporation for rain-fed agriculture, such as Burhan and Khalifa, out-yielded the other varieties. Mr. Ali Bin Saeed Al-Sharhan Agadi Pilot Farm: The Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID) has adopted a program for developing rain-fed agriculture in Sudan and modernizing it by applying Zero-Tillage cultivation system which is applied in advanced countries, such as the U.S. The system applies integrated technology packages and mechanization. To implement the above mentioned program, AAAID has established a pilot farm in Agadi, Blue Nile , Sudan . The pilot farm, which is owned by the Arab Sudanese Blue Nile Agricultural Company (one of AAAID affiliated companies), has achieved substantial success since the year 2001. Large-scale experiments have been implemented in the pilot farm project for comparing different levels of tillage. The Zero-Tillage, or No plowing, cultivation system out-performed all other systems, and achieved dramatic increases in productivity and quality over the other systems. For instance, the yield of sorghum has jumped from 250 Kg/fedan to 1200 Kg/fedan, and the yield of sunflower jumped from 150 Kg/fedan to 600 Kg/fedan. This is in addition to the rise in quality. Therefore, the zero-tillage system has been adopted as the cultivation system in the farm. The zero-tillage system, when mulch debris is kept on the land, helps increasing moisture content in the soil. It also helps minimizing soil erosion. Integrated technology packages and mechanization are integral parts of the zero-tillage system applied in Agadi. This large-scale pilot farm is intended to stand as a model for the development of rain-fed agriculture in Arab countries and the region, and for the development of projects of direct impact towards food security. Mr. Ali Bin Saeed Al-Sharhan UNRWA and AAAID cooperate to help poor Palestine refuges in Gaza and Lebanon The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID) are cooperating again to help poor Palestine refuges in Gaza and Lebanon. UNRWA’s Commissioner-General Ms. Karen Koning AbuZayd has signed three agreements with AAAID’s President, H.E. Mr. Abdul Kareem Mohammad Al-Amri. The ceremony took place on 28 September 2008 in the regional office of AAAID in Dubai, U.A.E.. The first agreement of US 2 million will help UNRWA create jobs mainly related to agriculture and fishery in Gaza. The number of beneficiaries directly supported by this funding is 2,312 who in turn support approximately 11,560 dependents AAAID is also assisting UNRWA with the reconstruction of houses belonging to extremely poor families in South Lebanon, those who could not otherwise afford a decent place to live. The Arab Authority is donating US 250,000 towards this project. The Board of Directors of AAAID held its 135th meeting in the period 14-15 January 2009 in its regional office in Dubai, U.A.E. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Ali Bin Saeed Al-Sharhan, President of AAAID. The meeting made a number of resolutions. The first of them included a welcome to H.E. Mr. Ali Bin Saeed Al-Sharhan as the new President of AAAID, assuring the Board’s confidence that he would lead AAAID to more success and progress, as he possesses the professional qualifications, knowledge and experience for that. The resolution included the Board expression of thanks and appreciation to H.E.
